“35% of injuries occurred during participation in some type of sports or exercise [of that percentage] 66% [happen to] young people, 29% to working-age adults, and about 9% to seniors.”

  • Sports injuries occur from overtraining but they can also occur from not warming up, lack of conditioning prior to starting a sport or exercise program, and improper technique or form when completing a task or exercise.
  • Sports injuries can result in muscle, ligament or tendon strains, sprains, and tears.
  • In more serious cases it can result in broken bones or a traumatic brain injury.
  • In the case of seniors, everyday activities like household chores (27%) and walking (28%) account for over half of their injuries. (Stats Canada)
  • Most common injured body parts of young people are their feet and ankles (Stats Canada)
  • Injuries involving shoulders, elbows and arms are common for seniors (Stats Canada)

Sports Injury Symptoms

The symptoms of a sports injury depend on the type of injury you have sustained. Because of this, it is not possible to list all the types of symptoms you may encounter. The most common sites for strained or pulled muscles:
