What is Arthritis?

The word “arthritis” simply means joint inflammation but for people living with arthritis it means being unable to physically function day to day without pain. This affects your ability to work, to enjoy leisure activities, or to complete basic activities of daily living. Did you know that 3/5 people with arthritis symptoms are actually working age and not our elderly population? In fact, according to The Arthritis Society of Canada, arthritis is “a leading cause of disability in Canada that affects more women than men, and is reported in 55% of people under the age of 65.”

Osteoarthritis is the type of arthritis that many people get as they age. It can happen at any age, but it is most common in older adults. Osteoarthritis is usually called arthritis.

Facts on Arthritis

  • It is a condition that can affect joints (causing joint stiffness), tendons, bones, ligaments and overall musculoskeletal system.
  • There are two main types of arthritis: osteoarthritis (from wear and tear to your joint’s cartilage over many years) and autoimmune types (body’s immune system attacks the joint capsule causing inflammation and swelling). Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type.
  • It is the number one reported chronic condition by women and the third most chronic reported condition by men in Canada.
  • Obesity, smoking, and lack of physical activity is linked to arthritis symptoms.

Arthritis Pain & Symptoms

Arthritis affects your quality of living. Symptoms can include any of the following in your joints:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion

Cause & Treatment

While there is currently no known cure you can manage the pain symptoms to help you improve your quality of life. With 17.4% of the population in Saskatchewan reporting symptoms, Venture Rehabilitation Sciences Group can help. A physical examination by one of our university trained physical therapists can determine the underlying cause of your pain. Using both active and passive therapy we can help strengthen the muscles surrounding your joints and improve your range of motion. In some cases we can prescribe splints and braces to help with joint pain. Our therapists will design a tailored treatment plan to get you back to living your best quality of life.
