Introduction

Are you dizzy? Feeling off balance? Afraid of falling? Vertigo or (BPPV) Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo makes it hard to have the confidence to do regular daily activities. You aren’t alone and BPPV treatment physiotherapy can help.

Imagine waking up one morning, rolling over in bed and suddenly feeling like the world is spinning. Or what if you bent over to pick something up or tie your shoe and felt so dizzy you thought you were going to fall? Imbalance and dizziness, sometimes called vertigo, is very common among our older population. Vertigo is a serious health concern because it puts you at risk of falling and causing more serious injuries.

“35% of adults over age 40 have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction [and] 80% of people over age 65 have experienced dizziness and BBPV.”

Vestibular Disorder Association

While vertigo may be an unpreventable effect of aging, it can be managed and treated with the right vertigo physiotherapy.

Vertigo Facts

  • Inside your ear is a vestibular apparatus that senses your heads position and movements. It carries information to your brain to process and controls your balance and orientation.
  • Vertigo is usually caused by an inner ear problem.
  • Problems with your inner ear create the sense of dizziness.
  • Vertigo can last a few minutes to a few hours and usually comes and goes.
  • Vertigo can affect your mood and concentration.
  • Symptoms often include a feeling of spinning, tilting, unbalance, or swaying. These symptoms can further cause nausea, vomiting, headache, sweating, or tinnitus.

Vertigo Treatment

  • (BPPV) Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (caused by tiny calcium particles that build up inside the ear and come loose) is the cause of 50% of all dizziness in older people.
  • The other common cause is Meniere’s Disease (an inner ear disorder caused by a fluid buildup which changes the pressure of your inner ear). This can also be associated with tinnitus.
  • Less common causes include head or neck injury and migraine headaches.

Commonly referred to by patients as ‘dizziness treatment’ or ‘ear balance treatment’, balance therapy (also known as vestibular rehabilitation) is an effective treatment. At Venture Rehabilitation Sciences Group, our university trained physical therapists will perform clinical tests and get a history of your symptoms to help determine if you suffer from vertigo. We will then work with you using a tailored treatment plan that can include but is not limited to:

  • Techniques to help reduce symptoms caused by movements
  • Balance and stability training to reduce vertigo related falls
  • Treatment to areas of your body (neck, muscles, joints) that may contribute to dizziness
  • Education and modification of lifestyle factors
  • Physiotherapy exercise program
