Introduction to Runner’s Knee Treatment

Are you experiencing knee pain after running or sore knees after running? Runner’s Knee Treatment via a university-trained physiotherapist at Venture Rehab may help.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome, more commonly referred to as runner’s knee, accounts for 25% of all injuries that develop in runners. However, this syndrome affects more than just runners, in fact, it is more common than you think. More now than ever people are trying to get active, shed pounds and live a healthy lifestyle. If you have an active lifestyle, enjoy exercise, or simply love to run then chances are you have experienced some type of knee pain. This pain is simple to relieve with early detection, rest, and rehabilitation.

Runner’s Knee Facts

  • Your knee joint is where your femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) meet. Your patella (knee cap) moves within a groove (this is called patellar tracking). If your kneecap doesn’t move properly in the groove when you bend or extend your leg then it can cause problems.
  • Anyone who spends time doing activities that require bending your knee can be at risk of developing runner’s knee.
  • Going for walks, bike rides, jumping, and squatting can all cause runner’s knee.
  • Dull or sharp pain in front, behind or around your kneecap.
  • Pain can be felt when running, squatting, climbing the stairs, or when you get up after sitting for a prolonged period of time.
  • Popping or grinding feeling inside your knee.
  • Swelling around your knee.

Causes of Runner’s Knee

Studies show that physical therapy is an effective treatment for runner’s knee because it addresses the problems that contribute to the pain and misalignment. A combination of the following factors contribute to runner’s knee:

  • Weak thigh muscles
  • Tight muscles or ligaments
  • Overuse activities that put a strain on your knee (i.e., running, squatting, climbing stairs)
  • Trauma or injury to your knee
  • Misalignment anywhere from your hips to your ankles can cause too much pressure on joints
  • Problems with the biomechanics of your feet (hypermobile feet, fallen arches, or overpronation).
