Balance, Stability and Posture

Do you suffer from poor posture? Have you slipped and fallen due to an accident? Balance, stability and posture are physical factors that require training and exercise to maintain.

2 minute read

We often talk about maintaining “balance” in our lives and immediately think of stress, work, relationships, money, etc… But what about our physical balance?

In the early years of our lives we take for granted our good posture, balance, low risk of cardiac disease and diabetes. As we age, our posture, balance and overall health may start to decrease, leaving us susceptible to injury and falling. The Public Health Agency of Canada states that falls are

“The leading cause of injuries among Canadians 65 years and over with 20% to 30% of seniors experiencing one fall each year.”

Simple routine exercise with an educated physiotherapist can help you train your body to function at its best as you age.

Balance & Posture Facts

  • Spinal balance and correct posture should leave you feeling relaxed, comfortable, stable and energized.
  • Good posture includes: head balanced over your hips, chin parallel to the floor, and a level pelvis.
  • Poor posture can cause pain, discomfort, and degenerative and chronic diseases.
  • Falls from lack of balance and stability cause a high percentage of hip fractures.

Balance & Posture Control

At Venture Rehab we combine endurance training, balance training and strength training to maximize your overall balance and stability. Our therapists design a unique and tailored exercise program based on your current skill level to specifically target the following areas:

  • Increased muscle strength in your hips and knees
  • Posture exercise to reduce strain on the spine and reduce upper body sway.
  • Proprioception (nervous system) training to help you react in a timely manner to unpredictable surfaces or obstacles, such as uneven ground or ice
  • Increased joint movement and flexibility
  • Stretching and elongating of tight muscles
